ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

Artist:  He Qi (China, contemporary)

Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?  Cleopas and his friend listened their way to an awareness that they were in the presence of the risen Lord.  Other people come to know better the love of God through hearing.  But for some, seeing provides an important entry into God's truths.

He qi views Cleopas, Cleopas's friend, and Jesus from behind.  The men are shepherded by Jesus' outstretched hands as he guides them along, an act that parallels the spiritual guidance he give as they walk toward Emmaus.  ><>

WHAT IS THE UPPER ROOM MODEL OF THE WALK TO EMMAUS?

The Upper Room model of The Walk to Emmaus has a firm foundation that has been tested throughout 25 years of Emmaus and over 50 years in Cursillo.  We consider the model a dynamic model and ways are provided to consider changes.  Individuals may suggest changes by submitting them in writing to the board of their local community.  If the local board approves, the board summits the proposal in writing to the Emmaus office.  The Emmaus office staff will submit the proposed change to the International Steering Committee (ISC) members for their review.  The proposed change will be discussed at the ISC meeting which meets once a year.  If the ISC approves, the Emmaus office staff will review the proposal and summit the proposal and the recommendations to The Upper Room administrators.  If the proposed change is approved, notification will be distributed through the newsletter, the web site and the Regional Representatives.

Being consistent with the model shows that communities are honoring the letter of agreement they have signed with The Upper Room.  Also, it is beneficial for pilgrims as they move around the country that the Emmaus community they move into is the same as the Emmaus community they left.

The Regional Representative for Mountain Trails Walk to Emmaus is the Reverend John Whittemore.  You may ask a board member for his address and email.  ><>
